OUR COLLECTIVE IMPACT

Beyond Medicines…

“Imagine a future where every person no matter where they live can access the lifesaving, innovative treatments they need, exactly when they need them. A future where medical breakthroughs reach patients quickly, with real, local impact.”Wendy Cupido, IPASA Vice-President (Gilead)

Our commitment extends well beyond medicines, reflecting a broader investment in South Africa’s people and healthcare system. According to an independent Frost & Sullivan study, IPASA members contributed over R91 million to community health programmes, while also building local skills and strengthening manufacturing capacity. These efforts have expanded access to healthcare in underserved communities and directly supported national health priorities, including services such as screening, counselling, education, and chronic care management. Below are examples of previous partnerships led by some IPASA members:

Unjani Clinics: Supported by multiple member companies, these nurse-owned clinics (over 250 across the country) deliver affordable, accessible primary healthcare to low-income communities. Investments have helped expand services to HIV, TB, maternal health, and chronic disease management.

Charlotte Maxeke Breast Health Clinic (Novartis and partners): A multidisciplinary centre of excellence launched in partnership with Wits University and Gauteng Department of Health to strengthen cancer care.

Mehlareng CSIR Initiatives (2020–2025): Astellas improved learning conditions through classroom upgrades, an IT Centre, and ongoing material support for pupils. The programme also promotes student wellbeing with regular donations, wellness days, and community-driven activities.

Servier’s Managing Adherence and Control: Servier supports adherence programmes for hypertension and diabetes, reaching over 230 000 patients and actively managing more than 86 000 through digital and pharmacy-based platforms.

DREAMS Initiative (DTAA): Johnson & Johnson (in partnership with UNFPA) funded the DREAMS (Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe) initiative, a programme focused on reducing HIV infections in adolescent girls and young women in sub-Saharan Africa.
